If you’ve ever seen DJ Yoda play, or heard one of his legendary Cut & Paste mix CDs, you’ll know that he’s no ordinary turntablist. Mashing up the most bizarre, unexpected, quirky and downright rib-tickling samples with world-class scratching and seriously dope beats from hip-hop, rock, drum & bass, dubstep, electro or anywhere else he sees fit, he creates truly unique collages of sound that raise a smile as much as they make you shake your thang.
We are immensely lucky then, to have an incredibly special, never-attempted-before, Cut & Paste: Country & Western Edition from the man himself – mashing up the likes of Johnny Cash and The Littlest Hobo with some seriously phat beats.
Sounds ridiculous right? It is, but somehow, it works. Simply one of the most inventive mixes we’ve ever heard – DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME Y’ALL!
What's your personal favourite track on it?
The whole point of this mix is that it’s all my favourite Country & Western and country-sampling hip-hop tracks – so I love everything on it. But probably “To See You Comin’ Round The Bend” by the Yonder Mountain String Band. It’s a bluegrass number that was sampled by Bubba Sparxxx for another track included on the mix – in one of the only cases of hip-hop sampling banjos!
What's the special ingredient in this mix?
Probably my own track “Duellin’ Banjos” - where I’ve swapped guitar for turntables so I’m scratch-battling the banjo player.
What's the best gig you've played recently?
Hmm – there’s a lot to choose from. But it was amazing to play dubstep to people in Singapore – they clearly hadn’t heard anything like it before
What have you got coming up?
I’m about to drop a new “How To Cut & Paste” mix – the 1930s Edition! It’s all old swing, jazz and roots stuff but mixed with drum and bass, hip-hop, b-more and dubstep.
And finally, do you have a special message for our readers?
I hope you enjoy my Cut & Paste: Country & Western Edition – it goes down best in a barn with chickens and moonshine, but just off your laptop will work fine.
