An increasingly prominent production duo with an increasingly unforgettable name, Bearweasel live in an underground hole just outside of London, and make some rather nice chuggy deep techno and sub-aquatic house music. Dean used to be the label manager for Meat Katie’s labels Kingsize, Lot49 and Adrift, and now runs Dispersion PR, helping promote labels like Four:Twenty Recordings, Freak n' Chic and Southern Fried while Louisa works in the same area with everyone from Tiesto to Kris Menace. Using their wide knowledge of the dance music industry and massive array of contacts, they have fast become one of the hottest names on people’s lips who love a likkle tech house.
Releases for labels like Tsuba, Steve Lawler's VIVa Music, Murmur, Perc Trax and Supernature should speak for themselves, and as this lush deep house and tech podcast from Bearweasel's DJ division, Dean Muhsin, shows, they're not just studio beasts.
Dean headlines our free party at The Hoxton Pony this Saturday 3rd October - click here for full details.
Sum up this podcast in 10 words...
A selection of tracks mixed together for Data Transmission’s lovely listeners.
What’s your personal favourite track on it?
Bit of a hard one that, as it changes all the time but I’d say Baby Ford’s Westway, just because of it’s simplicity and warmth – the perfect sort of track for a podcast, I think - something you can listen to at home and lose yourself in a bit.
What’s the special ingredient in this mix?
I wanted to do something that manages to sum up what I do as a DJ but would make sense if listened to outside a club situation, so I’ve opted for quite deep grooves and atmospheres rather than anything too heavy. That doesn’t really answer the question, so I’d say the special ingredient in the mix was me being tired, as it kept me from doing anything too driving (with the notable exception of Berkson & What’s Ghosts which I couldn’t leave out, due to the wonderful melodies).
What’s the best gig you’ve played recently?
Well, I’ve got to mention my residency for VIVa at Ministry Of Sound, really – as it’s always my best gig as I love the main room there, and I love warming up too as I get everything my own way! Other than that, I’d have said Mirconite in Limerick or Riff Raff in Middlesbrough – small, provincial nights which are intimate and the people involved are passionate.
What have you got coming up?
Well, because we (myself and Louisa of Bearweasel) had a bit of a slow start to the year with music, we’ve got quite a glut of stuff coming out soon. Remixes for Soma, Get Physical, Luna Records, Take as well as new EPs for Tsuba and VIVa. Gig wise, I’ve got Technique in Leeds with Carl Craig this Friday and then of course, the wonderful Data Transmission shindig in London on Saturday.
And finally, do you have a special message for our readers?
Always wash your hands.
