LTJ Bukem mixes FABRICLIVE46
The FABRICLIVE series has by no means been bad in recent times, but it’s been a while since they’ve featured a proper stone-cold legend. An excellent choice then, in Logical Progression / Good Looking / jungle pioneer LTJ Bukem for the next instalment.
One of the founding fathers of the UK breakbeat and consequent jungle sound, Bukem was instrumental pushing electronic music forward from the acid house and early rave days. Pioneering in choosing breakbeats over 4/4 kick drums, his track
Logical Progression in 1990 was one of the first big tracks to break free from the rigid formula of house and techno and choose something less constricting. His landmark 1996 compilation
Logical Progression – and indeed its follow-up – are electronic music classics, and his Good Looking label empire has brought countless classic albums and 12”s to the world of drum & bass and beyond. The Logical Progression nights around the world are also a byword for quality D&B with a great atmosphere.
The CD showcases his rediscovered hunger for new music that was in part kickstarted by meeting his birth mother 2 years ago (he was adopted at an early age), and features nothing but tracks from his Good Looking roster – from familiar names like Greg Packer and Tayla to a host of more recently discovered talent.
“This the music that I represent, and I’ve got to support it, so about three years ago I decided to go for it and get the label going again. Now every day I get up feeling inspired, the music that comes through my computer, the new artists, their way of thinking, their work ethic, everything.
“With the mix I really wanted to highlight what I’m doing as a DJ. I could’ve sat there with a computer and done what a lot of people do: a computer mix, which is great fun as you can do what you can’t do live. But for me personally, I wanted it to be exactly what I do on a Friday night, strictly dubplates and records. I also wanted to represent people on the mix that I am working with on Good Looking, who I have a strong belief will have some longevity in what they are doing, and are going to be prolific artists in their own right. For me, it doesn’t matter who the artist is, it’s just about good music. That’s been my ethos since day one.” It’s out on June 15
th in the UK and R.O.W., 14
th July in the USA.
