Tinnitus Awareness Week
Just a quick reminder that it's National Tinnitus Awareness Week this week - and that if you haven't protected your hearing already, you really should.
If you don't know what tinnitus is (and a suprising amount of people don't), it's a permanent ringing sound in one or both ears that can result after prolonged exposure to loud music. It's caused by damage to the tiny hairs in the inner ear which conduct sound vibrations - causing them to send a signal to the brain that a high-pitched ringing noise is constantly being heard. I've got it. Not only does it majorly suck (I can't hear total silence anymore), but it could also lead to hearing loss in later life.
Reasonable quality earplugs, which won't majorly diminish your enjoyment of the music, are available for as little as £15. But we majorly advise forking out the £100 - £150 to get yourself a pair of custom made, moulded-to-your-ear plugs that attenuate all frequencies by the same amount. You can even DJ with them in. Check out www.audiorelief.co.uk for details of all different types and prices of plugs - and quote Data Transmission for a 5% discount.
Last night saw 23 DJs play at Cargo in London for One Tune: One Cause to launch the week - including Adam F, Lottie, Way Out West, The Loose Cannons, Wrongtom, Xpress-2 and Jon Carter. The man behind the event, Xfm's Eddy Temple-Morris, told CMU Daily: "I want to help change the law, so that clubs and noisy bars not only have to protect those who work there, but also have to make their customers aware of the risks. I don't want sound systems to be turned down. That would suck. But it's all about enabling every gig goer and clubber to make a properly informed choice".
