With his forthcoming debut artist album Innuendo due for imminent release on New Zealand’s premier D&B supplier, Samurai Music, DT goes down under to chat with Trei, an up-and-coming D&B producer, who’s released on a host of well renowned labels, including Friction’s acclaimed Shogun Audio label and Marky’s imprint, Innerground. He’s got a European tour lined up for November 2009, and in another life he’d be a matador, or so he says, so read on… How and when were you first infected by dance music? Initially my interest in dance music came from people like The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers and Leftfield. A lot of my mates are/were techno DJs so I was always exposed to that side of things, but the more I heard drum’n’ bass, the more I gravitated towards it. Then things like Wormhole (Ed Rush & Optical), New Forms (Roni Size & Reprezent), Photek etc really started to click with me. When did you start producing, and how long was it before you started making tracks that you were really happy with? I started toying with electronic music with the intent of incorporating it into a live hybrid sound, but as I got deeper into it manifested into writing complete tunes myself. I think from the time I start getting ideas together to the time I actual felt it was time to show what I’d come up with was realistically 3 or so years…maybe more. I think as a musician / artist you’re never going to be 100% happy with your work; there’s always going to be something that could be changed/altered/done better and that’s what feeds progress to me. What have been your personal favourite productions so far? Well for me at the moment I’m really excited about the forthcoming album stuff. Tracks like Lead Me On, Thunder Biscuit, Sleepless and Still Remains are all going down really well. Previous to that tracks like Justify (Commercial Suicide), Shine On (SGN:LTD) and Day Away (Obsessions) are all up there for sure. Where does your name come from? No great intricate reasoning behind this one, it’s just something my friends used to call me, and once I started getting out there; TREi became it. What have you got in store for the coming months? The big one for me is my debut Album on NZ’s Samurai Music scheduled for the 24th of September release. Other things on the way include a 12” on Friction’s Shogun Ltd label (Shine On / Livewire), a track on Marky’s label Innerground called Only One, a 12” on Concord Dawn’s label Uprising (Hotfoot (w/Dose) / Mindless) and a European Tour set for November 2009. What can we expect from one of your DJ sets? Good question, a bit of everything really; I like to keep things moving through different and contrasting ‘styles’, with a few surprises along the way to keep things interesting. If you weren’t a DJ/producer, what would you be? A Matador. Which other producers and DJs do you really rate? Definitely the Kiwis - State of Mind, The Upbeats, Dose, Agent Alvin, Concord Dawn etc as well as guys like Subwave, Chris SU, Prolix, Bungle, Logistics and Break to name a few. DJs I really rate are people like Friction, Andy C, Klute, Ed Rush and Cyantific.
