Mango

By: Motorcitysoul
Label: Freerange Records
Written by: BenGomori
Rating: 9/10

Motorcitysoul deliver as usual, serving up a retro house cut that Carl Craig himself would be proud of. Reminiscent of the time when acid house and techno were crossing over, it’s lead by a doubled-up bass and short, sharp old skool keyboard melody – uplifting and positive without being cheesy. Topped off with a string-synth counter melody and a lo-fi BBC Micro style arpeggio, it’s a respectful paean to the days of dance music old. Milton Jackson ups the tech rating with his usual, slightly off-kilter and almost detuned synth riffage, and understated bass and percussion.

Whoa there! Jimpster delivers one of his very finest productions to date on his sublime remix. We start with bumping, suggestive deep house bass and crisp, smacky claps before an irresistible conga loop and a sexy hi-hat pattern both drop in at once. It’s a damn solid groove already, and I for one would be happy grooving to this alone. But hold on – soft, muted techy stabs are introduced via a classic Detroit style simple melody, next a delicate cooing noise that sounds like a pigeon drifting off to sleep, and other snippets of FX and suggestions of riffs echoing around in the background. It’s delicious, sensuous, classic house music – in at the deep end.
