Dessous Best Kept Secrets

By: Various Artists mixed by Vincenzo
Label: Dessous Recordings
Written by: grahame
Rating: 8/10

Dessous is part of the Steve Bug’smarvellous Superstition Network label group that includes his much-lauded Poker Flat label and Moonbootica’s occasionally excellent Moonboutique imprint. Here we have 2 discs (one mixed, one unmixed) of some of his “other” label’s finest unreleased cuts, new tracks made for this album, and other rarities. It’s all generally on a deep and housey tip, but with a wide range of feelings and sounds within that realm. Disc 1 is full of tasty remixes - Morgan Geist gets his throb-on with his remix of Phonique & Ereland Øye’s gorgeous ‘Casualties’, all rubbery electro bass and crisp percussion, with cleverly utilised bursts of those gorgeous strings giving the track an epic, filmic quality. Tanzmann & Stefanik go back to deep, dubby house basics on their remix of DJ FEX’s ‘Mysterious Conversation’, while Will Saul goes cool and breezy on his easy-grooving rework of Phonique’s quirksome ‘Bang’.

Disc 2 is mixed by the rather splendid Vincenzo, kicking off with Giles Smith (of secretsundaze fame) and production partner King Roc under their Two Armadillos moniker with a double header of smoky, bongo-laden grooves, before Anja Schneider’s remix of Alison Marks’ ‘Rothschild’s Violin’ infuses the mix with delicate, rippling trancey chord sequences and gentle licks of warm bass, while the ethereal, shimmering old school synths of Steve Ferrand & Pete Sung’s are on a similar vibe. bgb’s ‘A Crack In The Glass’ pushes us in a more energetic direction with its inspired tapestry of disparate synth and bass sounds, and as the mix threatens to get to something more full on, Vincenzo pulls on the reins and plunges us back into deeper, more groove-led cuts. The bell curved nature of the mix is slightly frustrating, but the quality of the tracks throughout means its not too much of a hinderence.

A great label with a superb, diverse repertoire of innovative producers, Dessous has come up trumps on this one.
